Loker: St. Anthony's Institute

Charles Godtschalk (1809-1892) had donated his property to the Divine Almshouses of Ypres in his will to build an orphanage. The Board of Almshouses had an empty Sint-Antonius home for the elderly in Loker, and sold it in 1896 to the Godtschalck Foundation, which housed orphans. An extension was built with the money saved, by Leonard Verstraete. In 1901, the liberal MP Janson questioned the Minister: the building should be called “Stichting Godtschalck”, because “Saint Antoine n'a rien donné et il reçoit tout, Godtschalck a tout donné et il ne reçoit rien”. The case was solved with a wooden sign with “Stichting Godtschalck” above the entrance.

1904

Kampenhout: Almshouse

Nowadays such a building would be called a residential care center (WZC), also something in which the Verstraetes are still a leading player to this day. But Kampenhout, between Leuven and Mechelen, is a long way 'off the track' , and it was not that they had nothing to do in that period, on the contrary! Architect Goethals from Aalst was (again) involved in something, une fois n'est pas coutume.

After 1906, further improvements were carried out. In 1920 electric light was installed everywhere in the building, and in 1924 the water pipe followed...

Roosdaal (Pamel): Almshouse and monastery

Just two years after the construction of the Sint-Gaugericus church in Pamel (Roosdaal) in Brabant, the West Flemish builders are once again at work in the municipality, this time a stone's throw from the church, for the construction of a house of worship and monastery . The Charity Sisters of the Verrezen Zaligmaker from Sint-Niklaas had come to Pamel in 1904 at the request of pastor Van Eyndhoven - the driving force behind the Sint-Gaugericus Church - and he was able to convince the sisters to build a new house of worship and convent - and with the same contractor who built the church.
Work began on Good Friday, March 31, 1906, and lasted two years minus a month. The almshouse had a main or front building with two large wings attached to it, and a chapel between those two wings. It is no coincidence that this house of worship by Pamel resembles this one by Kampenhout, built in 1904-1905; it was also designed by architect Jules Goethals from Aalst.
The Pamels rest home was demolished in the years 1995-1996 to make way for service flats.

1923

Antwerp (Borgerhout): Home pour les Petits Enfants

The construction of this crêche in the Vosstraat was supervised by the architects Cols-De Roeck, who later built another chapel, and after WW2 rebuilt the tower of the chapel. The clients were the sisters der Kleinen, with the aim of providing healthy food/milk to needy parents with young children and childcare, especially during the war years 1914-1918 for orphans up to 12 years old. In addition, they also founded a home for unmarried mothers, and later also a private school for childcare workers. Today, the building is still a nursery, 'De Kleine Vos'.

Antwerp (Berchem): Our Lady Institute

In 1926, the Antwerp congregation of the Sisters of Our Lady of Namur moved its primary school and kindergarten department from the two stately buildings in Keizerstraat, next to the Rockockxhuis, to the Pulhof in Berchem. The secondary school followed in 1932, and a little later also the normal school and the regency. At the same time, the community of more than fifty sisters moved from the house “l'Empereur” to Berchem.

The new school with its symmetrical brick facade is an example of new objectivity and art deco, designed by architect Camille Bal.

1930

Antwerp (Schoten): School Sisters Childhood Jesu

The Sisters Kindsheid Jesu, established in Antwerp's Left Bank since 1895, focused primarily on caring for sick and abandoned children, and later on for orphans and neglected youth. When their school was expropriated in 1923 (the first tunnel under the Scheldt aka 'the Rabbit Pipe' just came above ground on their property) the congregation moved to a new residential area, the Koningshof in  Schoten . Bouwmeester Gustave Voets drew the design for the "Boarding school for little boys", and the Verstraete brothers started construction in 1930. During WW2 a black period started, the monastery was confiscated and used as "Heimschule Flandern" for the Flemish Hitler youth. Today the building is once again a free primary school.

Zedelgem (Aartrijke): Founded by the Guardian Angel

In 1864, the Sisters of Charity of Kortemark accepted a donation of farm buildings in Aartrijke, and converted them into a home for the elderly. In 1937 a considerable expansion takes place by the Verstraetes , there is talk of a non-profit organization with the monastery hospital of Kortemark as owner. From 1953 the orphanage is replaced by the institute "De Engelbewaarder" for children with intellectual disabilities. In 1954 the old people's home is closed.

1959

Bonneville (Andenne): Saint Lambert

In Andenne, Bonneville, the last monastery in the Verstraete History was built under the leadership of Luc Verstraete. We suspect that this must have been one of the very last monasteries to be built in Belgium! In addition to a monastery, a school was also established, in a total of nine blocks. Today, the building is part of the Belgian organization 'Brothers of Charity', and the Sint-Lambertus Center is the residence and activity center for almost 240 adults with a mental handicap.

Roeselare: New wing Municipal Hospital

You couldn't miss it in Bruggesteenweg, the hospital that has been caring for the sick and elderly for hundreds of years. With buildings that also partly date from that time. Time for an ambitious new wing with lots of light in the rooms and - at that time - the most modern technology. It's better to let Verstraete do something like that.

Ypres: Song of the Sun

We renovated the old people's home and kept the convent chapel of the poor lads. This pre-war monastery complex dates from 1900.

Rumbeke: Mission house of scheut

The site of Domein ter Scheut carries a whole history with it. The notary house on the Koningsstraat side was bought in the 1960s by Jozef Camerlynck and Simonne Vanneste, who donated the house to the non-profit organization Our Children. Scheut bought the property in 1976 and in 2004 we converted the villa into communal living areas and built a new building in the garden with rooms and sanitary facilities for the fathers.

Roeselare: Binnenhof

The Binnenhof, formerly 'Regenboog Roeselare', opened its doors in 2012. The Binnenhof is a group of assisted living apartments (service flats) in the heart of Roeselare. The building can be recognized by its 'red tiles', an innovative architecture for the city.

Verstraete.team designed the concept, built the project and still operates the GAW itself. This makes Binnenhof the first care concept developed by Verstraete. Based on the experiences in the Binnenhof, Verstraete can now respond even better to the needs of the older population. This encourages the development of new concepts and adapted housing.
